Sections in Ewing Cemetery Follow Historical Trends
Sections A & B
Sections A and B were the first developed sections in the cemetery. Originally there was a packed earth road leading down along the sections, and the remainder of the land was basically a fallow field.
When these sections were developed, the habit was for a family to purchase a plot of graves for future generations of burials. When a family purchased a plot or more of graves, they were given “monument rights” to be able to place a large monument with the family name at the center of the graves purchased, and smaller footstones could be placed for each individual placed in a grave.
First burial in Section A was young Robert Hough on Aug 13, 1896.
First burial in Section B was Baby Wiseman on May 30, 1898.
Three rows of graves in this section were purchased by the Order of Oddfellows. They have one large monument marking their area and identically shaped stones for each interment of their members.
Section F
This is our memorial section. Flat bronze markers located at the foot of each grave are the only form of memorialization here.
First burial in the section was Frederick W. Bennett on June 17, 1935.
Also located in Section F are our public mausoleums, patio crypts, and urn garden graves.
Section J
There are many smaller sections within Section J., including consecrated Jewish sections that are available for purchase by anyone of that faith. The newest section of J features pre-poured concrete strips that allow for the immediate placing of a monument on a loved one's grave.
The first burial in the section was Leonard Hue on Feb 12, 1972.
Section D
When this section was opened it was set up for traditional family plots with monuments at the center showing the family name.
First burial in the section was Anna M. Plunkett on July 15, 1930.
As traditions changed over time, graves within plots were sold in pairs or individually. Monument rights placed at the head of graves was given to the lot owner who purchased the majority of the graves within a lot. All other burials within the lot could be memorialized with smaller stones placed at the foot of the graves.
Section G & H
Section G and H were laid out with the flexibility of being either family plots or individual graves. All graves in these sections may have a monument of regulated size at the head of the grave.
First burial in section G was Frederick Wittenborn on Mar 22, 1927.
First burial in section H was Amy Evans on Jan 8, 1973.
In addition to graves, we have three private mausoleums in section H.
Mausoleum I
Mausoleum 1 was the first of three public mausoleums erected in the cemetery. It contains individual and true companion crypts as well as some niches for cremated remains.
First entombment in the mausoleum was Henry Scheffer on Jan 7, 1975.
Section E
In the center of this section is our Garden of Christ. It was laid out as family plots and features marble Christian statuary. Many of the plots already contain walls, balustrades, and stone benches that act as a family monument. Individual memorials on graves are restricted to flush marble and are placed at the foot of each grave.
First burial in the section was Marion Hall on July 29, 1940.
Graves outside the Garden of Christ were not laid out as large family plots. This allowed flexibility in purchasing and memorialization.
Section I
This section was purchased by Har Sinai Temple in the 1950s and is held by the Temple for purchase by their members.
First burial in the section was Sidney Kemp on Mar 13, 1957.
Patio Crypts
Patio crypts are below ground options for entombment that provide a ready-made vault to receive loved ones remains.
First entombment in the patio crypts was Frank Buehler on Oct 16, 1964.
Our Patio Crypt area that parallels Scotch Road will be receiving a face-lift and the addition of a granite columbarium in 2023.
